Hailer’s Climate Transition Plan

The aim of this climate transition plan is to set out a pathway for reducing Hailer’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% of 2018 levels, by 2025, with additional longer term plans to achieve Net Zero GHGs (without offsetting or mitigation), by 2050.

To Reach This Goal, Hailer Has Or Will

Reduced Scope 2 emissions through reduced work travel, implementing a train not plane policy, and offering hybrid working.
Scope 1 emissions have reduced due to an increased proportion of renewable energy in the National Grid. Much of the electricity consumption at our premises is generated by a neighbouring solar farm, but the rest is from the national grid on a commercial (non renewable tariff) which our landlord controls. We are lobbying our landlord to switch to a renewable energy provider.

Since the 2018 baseline, Hailer’s CO2e emissions have reduced by 64% from 3.707 tonnes to 1.32 tonnes in 2024.

In the five years since 2019 Hailer has planted 139 trees through Trees For Life’s project to rewild the Scottish Highlands, supporting biodiversity in an attempt to avoid ecosystem collapse. We will continue to plant trees alongside our other carbon mitigation efforts, to ensure that the business’s remaining GHG emissions are accounted for.

To address Scope 3 emissions, Hailer’s digital properties were moved to servers powered by renewable energy, banking was switching to a bank that does not invest in fossil fuels, pension and insurance suppliers have been interrogated.

To further reduce Hailer’s GHG emissions in order to reach Net Zero, we need to be successful in transitioning our landlord (and therefore all of the neighbouring businesses on site) to a renewable energy tariff.
Scope 2 emissions through team commuting will need to be reduced by half, possibly through increased cycling to work or a switch to an much lower emission or electric vehicle charged through a renewable tariff (which at present would mean at home).

To reduce the emissions indirectly related to the consumption of Hailer’s services (primarily the viewing of digital content created for clients) Hailer will continue to work with clients whenever possible to reduce the climate footprint of their digital properties (not just hosting on servers powered by renewables, but by implementing low carbon design and build principles to reduce the energy consumption per page visit).

Barriers We Have Met Or Expect

Not owning our premises and therefore having no way to tell what percentage of Hailer’s electricity consumption is generated by the neighbouring solar farm or control over our electricity supplier (Scope 1) is a current challenge.

The impact of the money spent on insurance is very difficult to measure. In 2024 we sought the advice of Tony Burdon from Make My Money Matter and liaised with Hailer’s insurance broker to look into whether or not our insurer has a published Net Zero plan.

As a small service business with a relatively small carbon and GHG footprint, the majority of Hailer’s future positive impact will likely be made through guiding and influencing the businesses that we work with to make changes that could result in much larger reductions than any that we could further make within Hailer.
